Julie Phillips has been a passionate and vocal advocate for the biotech sector and the opportunity it poses for Australia. Commencing in the industry as a clinical pharmacist in major Sydney teaching hospitals, Julie went on to spend more than 15 years working in regulatory affairs, clinical trials and pharmacoeconomics. It was in this role where Julie became involved in industry input into Australia’s pivotal and world first cost-effectiveness guidelines to the Pharmaceuticals Benefits Scheme.

Following her MBA, Julie shifted her focus to Australian startups, and commenced work as the CEO and Director of a number of Australian life sciences companies over the following decade, including ASX-listed companies. Julie’s responsibilities and achievements are impressive: she is a University of Newcastle Council Member; is Chair of AusBiotech Ltd, the national peak biotechnology industry association; is a Director of medtech and pharmaceuticals Industry Growth Centre MTPConnect; and is CEO and Director of biotech company, BioDiem Ltd. She sits on Innovation and Science Australia’s R&D Incentives Committee and is an inventor on two life science patents which are currently being commercialised.

Join us at Startup Stories to hear from one of Australia’s most informed and influential people in biotech and Julie’s incredible story as a clinical pharmacist, inventor and startup CEO and Director.

About Startup Stories

Startup Stories takes place regularly at the University of Newcastle’s coworking space I2N Hub Hunter Street. Startup founders talk candidly about their experience as an entrepreneur and business owner – the highs, the lows, the wins, the mistakes, the whole enchilada. Startup Stories provides real-life examples of the different stages of the startup journey, creating a forum for startups to share and learn but also for the community to see tangible evidence of entrepreneurship making a difference in our region. #i2nStartupStories

What is I2N?

The University of Newcastle’s Integrated Innovation Network (I2N) fuels the success of innovators and entrepreneurs by connecting them with other founders, mentors, experts, customers and investors, turning their ideas into global impact.
