Event Overview

AIE CSIRO Hydrogen Seminar

Hydrogen’s back: this time for real?

Hydrogen has been touted as a solution to energy and transport sector decarbonisation for decades, without gaining significant traction due to costs and infrastructure considerations.

Recently, we have seen the cost of renewable generation and hydrogen utilisation systems decrease, the development of new technologies for hydrogen carrier storage and distribution, and a strong market pull from major economies such as Japan and South Korea for imported, zero carbon energy via hydrogen.

These factors together have changed the equation, and hydrogen energy systems for renewable energy storage and export are now part of the global transition to low and zero carbon energy.

CSIRO has RD&D activities across the hydrogen value chain, supporting the development of a new export industry based on hydrogen as well as domestic solutions for decarbonisation. This work ranges from fundamental science and technology development through to demonstration and commercialisation activities with local and global partners.

This seminar will be in three parts:

 - An overview of recent developments in hydrogen and how they support a new export opportunity for Australia;
 - A case study on the production and use of ammonia as a hydrogen carrier; and
 - Some insights into how we are hybridising these emerging energy systems by coupling with concentrated solar thermal.

Arrival advice: On arrival, all visitors to the CSIRO site must go to reception and sign in to the visitors log and sign out on departure. Tea/Coffee and light snacks (afternoon tea) will be available on arrival and after the speakers talks have concluded.
